Reading while listening to texts (RWL) is a promising way to improve the learning benefits provided by a reading experience. In an exploratory study, we investigated the effect of synchronizing the highlighting of words (visual) with their auditory (speech) counterpart during a RWL task. Forty French children from 3rd to 5th grade read short stories in their native language while hearing the story spoken by a narrator. In the non-synchronized (S-) condition the text was written in black on a white background, whereas in the synchronized (S+) RWL, the text was written in grey and the words were dynamically written in black when they were aurally displayed, in a karaoke-like fashion. The children were then unexpectedly tested on their memory for the orthographic form and semantic category of pseudowords that were included in the stories. The effect of synchronizing was null in the orthographic task and negative in the semantic task. Children’s preference was mainly for the S- condition, except for the poorest readers who tended to prefer the S+ condition. In addition, the children's eye movements were recorded during reading. Gaze was affected by synchronization, with fewer but longer fixations on words, and fewer regressive saccades in the S+ condition compared to the S- condition. Thus, the S+ condition presumably captured the children's attention toward the currently heard word, which forced the children to be strictly aligned with the oral modality.

this article deals with the syntax of personal pronouns and focuses on clitic pronouns, which are one of the major sources of variation across the Romance languages. For each parameter of variation (e.g. placement, climbing, doubling, interpretation, etc.) the article seeks to establish descriptive generalisations based on a rich array of data gathered from present-day varieties and historical vernaculars.

Subject and impersonal clitics in northern Italian dialects 1

The present contribution focuses on the interaction between the impersonal si/se and subject clitics in northern Italian dialects. In western dialects, si co-occurs with a non-agreeing clitic form (while it cannot co-occur with object clitics in the so-called passive-si construction); in Venetan dialects, the co-occurrence of se and subject clitics is degraded/ungrammatical, while in Friulian the combination is acceptable, but the subject clitic is dropped. I argue that the peculiar behaviour of northern Italian dialects results from the Multiple-Agree relation holding between T, sarb, and the argument of passive-like constructions (D'Alessandro 2007), coupled with language-specific constraints on the realisation of T's features (Calabrese & Pescarini 2014).

The paper compares a morphophonological and a syntactic approach to stress shift and enclisis/proclisis asymmetries. The former analysis envisages the co-occurrence of multiple allomorphs with the same featural content, which are distributed in accordance with phonological rules. The latter analysis, by contrast , is based on the hypothesis that alternations are due to the co-occurrence of items belonging to different classes. I argue that the syntactic analyses put forth so far are not superior previous morphophonological accounts. I acknowledge that the synchronic distribution of allomorphs does not result from productive phonological rules. Nonetheless, this is not per se a valid argument in favor of syntactic, class-based accounts, which must be advanced in compliance with Occam's razor.
