Adjunct clauses are relative clauses: evidence from case-marked clauses in Hungarian
The purpose of the present talk is to argue for an analysis of adjunct clauses as relative clauses. The argument rests mainly upon the observation that Hungarian clause-linkers are marked for case. Arsenijevic (2021) proposes that all adjunct clauses are relative clauses, outlining a general semantics of what adjunct clauses should be like. I will work towards extending the proposal, basing it on the idea, put forth independently in previous work, that causal clauses in Hungarian are relative clauses relativizing over situations.
I will show how the morpho-syntax of Hungarian clause-linkers can support a syntactic approach to the adjunct clauses, thus supporting Arsenijevic’s insight and semantic approach to adjunct clauses.
